Cholesteatoma

Anyone who takes a quick look at the word cholesteatoma immediatelyd begins to wonder just what a cholesteatoma really is. Doctors and some other health professionals will, of course, know what the name refers to; however, it is simply not a word that has entered into the vocabulary of the average English speaker.

What Is It?

A cholesteatoma hematoma is a growth inside the ear that can be caused by a chain reaction of events. Sometimes they are caused by swimmer’s ear and other times by impacted earwax, but the bottom line is that a growth begins to appear inside the ear and as it becomes bigger and bigger can result in large amounts of pain and can be detrimental to hearing health as they grow large enough to overtake parts of the inner ear. Cholesteatoma surgery takes care of removing the growth; however, the cholesteatoma must be detected and operated on before damage is done in order to prevent the ear from being damaged.

Even when a growth is named a benign middle ear cholesteatoma, meaning that it is not cancerous, it can still do large amounts of damage to a person in the form of injuring their hearing capacity. Even if it is not cancerous, it is necessary to undergo cholesteatoma surgical removal in order to get the growth out of the inner ear. Since cholesteatoma symptoms include a huge amount of pain (even facial pain) it is often quite easy o know that one has a cholesteatoma and have it looked at. Someone who has one growing in their ear will probably be shocked to see cholesteatoma pictures and see just how big the thing growing inside their ear could really be.

Types

While an external auditory canal cholesteatoma can cause less damage than one that is growing in the inner ear, both types are essentially dangerous and should be treated as an ear problem cholesteatoma, and nothing less. Even when the cholesteatoma is benign, it is unsafe to let it continue growing in your ear.

More Info

If you would like to know more about specific types of cholesteatoma or more about prevention, you should visit your health professional if you have any symptoms of having a cholesteatoma. Although the information is here, there is much more information that a health professional can give you, especially on the question “what is the cause of cholesteatoma?” Knowing the different types, such as granuloma cholesteatoma, is essential for those with cholesteatoma. Be prepared to describe your symptoms, you can’t simply walk in and simply say “ please tell me what a cholesteatoma is”.
